Winner Jumbo Hackathon
Concept Jumbo Supermarkets Hackathon:
How might we harness the power of AI to add real value to the daily lives of home cooks whilst reducing food waste and obtaining the business goals of Jumbo Supermarkets?
The Challenge
Every year Jumbo Supermarkets organizes a hackathon for (potential) partners. In 2024 the theme was AI. In 24 hours a multidisciplinary team of strategists, copywriters, designers, developers and data-analysts came up with a concept that ended up winning the hackathon. This year’s challenge was: How might we harness the power of AI to add real value to the daily lives of home cooks?
The Solution
The central challenge the solution tackles is that many house-holds struggle to come up with quick and nutricious daily recipes. Apart from this a lot of fresh produce goes to waste in domestic fridges because consumers have simply forgotten about them or people have a limited range of recipes in their mental cookbook, or both. The prototype was a double edged sword; providing Jumbo customer with healthy and delicious meal plans based on the fresh produce that is already available in their fridge thus reducing waste.
Jumbo => Yummie => Jummie.
The “Jummy” AI meal plan generator is integrated in the Jumbo App and takes both spoken and written input. Customer: “Hey Jummy: I’m looking for a quick Asian inspired recipe for 4 people”. Jummy “What fresh produce do you have in your fridge?” Customer: “2 carrots, a bell pepper and half a head of lettuce”. The AI engine converts speech to text and selects the relevant keywords to search the Jumbo recipe database. The output is a collection of 3 recipes in different price tiers based on the submitted parameters and available produce that can be added to the built-in shopping list directly. On the powerBI dashboarding side trends in search queries can be monitored and suggestions by Jumbo on recipes or products that are on offer can be pushed thus servicing both Jumbo customers as well as the company itself.
The Result
The Jummy concept was shortlisted for the pitch finale and selected as the winning concept.
The jury verdict; an end to end solution tackling multiple consumer and business problems in a single solution that is seamlessly integrated in the existing Jumbo digital infrastructure.
The award: 3 x 1 minute free shopping spree in a Jumbo supermarket. The proceeds have been donated to the local food bank.
The concept was adapted by Jumbo internal development team for further development in the app.
My role
-
Our aim was combining an AI powered solution (hard demand) for a real consumer challenge (quick & nutritional recipes on demand) with a environmental issue (reducing food waste) and integrating this in the existing Jumbo digital infrastructure (consumer app and Jumbo dashboarding) for easy adaptation. By conducting a brief consumer research, designing a storyboard and userflows the foundation of the concept was laid.
-
Creating a winning concept in 24 hours with a mulitidisciplinary team of strategists, copywriters, designer, data & AI engineers calls for a structured approach. I was responsible for guiding this process and seamlessly integrating all elements into a end to end working prototype.
-
Together with a team of UX & UI designers the storyboard was translated into an interactive prototype that clearly told the story of the concept.
-
In collaboration with fellow strategists and copy writers a 3 minute hackathon pitch was created that highlighted the concept and its benefits during a presentation which I co-presented to the Board of Jumbo Supermarkets.
